Aloha, and Welcome to Joy to the World!
Aloha! Joy to the Worldへようこそ！
When I look back at how Joy to the World began in 1999, I'm reminded of just how special this journey has been.
I originally started an English conversation school, and many of the parents of my young students encouraged me to open an international school. At that time, there were no international schools in our area of Bunkyo-ku, and these families wanted their children to have more opportunities to learn and grow in an English-speaking environment.
With their encouragement and support, Joy to the World American International School was born.
What started as a small school has become a wonderful community of children, parents, and teachers. And after more than 27 years, my love for teaching and seeing children grow is just as strong as it was on our very first day.
1999年にJoy to the Worldを始めた頃のことを振り返ると、これまで本当に多くの素敵な出会いに恵まれ、特別な時間を過ごしてきたのだと感じます。
もともと私は英会話スクールを開いていましたが、当時通っていた小さな子どもたちの保護者の皆さんから、「ぜひインターナショナルスクールを作ってほしい」という声をたくさんいただくようになりました。
その頃、文京区のこの地域にはまだインターナショナルスクールがなく、保護者の皆さんは、子どもたちがもっと英語に触れながら、さまざまなことを学び、成長できる環境を求めていました。
そんな保護者の皆さんの想いと温かい後押しがあって誕生したのが、Joy to the World American International Schoolです。
小さなスクールとして始まったJoyも、今では子どもたち、保護者の皆さん、そして先生たちが一緒になって支え合う、温かいコミュニティへと成長しました。
1999年の開校から今日まで、子どもたちに教えること、そして一人ひとりが成長していく姿を見ることへの喜びは、スクールを始めたあの日から少しも変わっていません。
The Spirit of Aloha
アロハの心を大切に
Being from Hawaii, I've always believed in the spirit of Aloha—treating people with kindness, respect, warmth, and a genuine sense of caring.
That's the atmosphere I've always wanted at Joy.
In Hawaii, we also have a special word, ʻOhana, which means family. To me, ʻOhana is about caring for one another, creating a sense of belonging, and making everyone feel welcome.
I believe young children learn best when they feel comfortable, happy, and confident. Every child is different, and it's important that we recognize their individual personalities, encourage their curiosity, and help them discover what they are capable of achieving.
Of course, learning English is an important part of what we do. But at Joy, it's about much more than language.
Through our English-speaking environment, children develop friendships, independence, communication skills, creativity, and the confidence to express themselves.
Most importantly, I want children to enjoy coming to school every day and to develop happy memories that stay with them as they grow.
ハワイ出身の私が、ずっと大切にしてきたのが「アロハの心」です。
相手を思いやり、尊重し、温かく接すること。そして、心から相手を大切にすること。
Joyも、そんなアロハの心が自然と感じられる場所であってほしいと、開校当初から願ってきました。
ハワイには、もう一つ大切な言葉があります。それが「ʻOhana（オハナ）」です。ハワイ語で「家族」を意味します。
私にとってオハナとは、ただ家族というだけでなく、お互いを思いやり、支え合い、誰もが「ここは自分の居場所なんだ」と安心して感じられる、そんな温かいつながりのことです。
私は、小さな子どもたちは、安心して楽しく過ごし、自分に自信を持てる環境の中でこそ、のびのびと学び、成長できると考えています。
子どもたちは一人ひとり違います。得意なことも、興味を持つことも、成長のペースもそれぞれです。
だからこそ、その子らしさを大切にしながら、好奇心を育み、「自分にもこんなことができるんだ！」という発見や喜びをたくさん経験してほしいと思っています。
もちろん、英語を学ぶことはJoyの教育の大切な柱の一つです。でも、私たちが子どもたちに届けたいものは、英語だけではありません。
英語で過ごす毎日の中で、お友達との関わり方や自立心、自分の気持ちを伝える力、創造力、そして新しいことに挑戦する自信を少しずつ育んでいきます。
そして何よりも、子どもたちには毎朝「今日もJoyに行きたい！」と思ってもらいたいのです。
保護者の皆さんにも、お子様が毎日楽しく過ごし、少しずつ成長していく姿を安心して見守っていただけたらと思っています。
Joyで過ごした日々が、子どもたちにとって、成長してからも思い出すと自然と笑顔になれるような、楽しい思い出として心に残ってくれたら、これほど嬉しいことはありません。
What Makes Me Proud
私が何より嬉しく、誇りに思うこと
Over the years, I've had the pleasure of watching so many children begin their educational journeys at Joy and move on to elementary school, middle school, high school, and beyond.
One of the things that makes me especially proud is when our former students, now teenagers, return during their summer vacations to volunteer and spend time with our younger children.
Seeing them walk through our doors again, remembering their time at Joy and wanting to be part of it, means a great deal to me.
It's a wonderful reminder that the relationships we build here can continue long after graduation.
これまでの長い年月の中で、本当にたくさんの子どもたちがJoyで初めての学びを経験し、やがて小学校、中学校、高校、そしてその先へと成長していく姿を見てきました。
そんな中でも、私が特に嬉しく、誇らしく思うことがあります。
それは、かつてJoyに通っていた子どもたちが、10代になってからも夏休みにボランティアとして戻ってきて、小さな子どもたちと一緒に過ごしてくれることです。
小さかったあの子たちが、いつの間にかこんなに大きくなって、またJoyに戻ってきてくれる。
Joyで過ごした日々を覚えていて、今度は自分たちが小さな子どもたちと関わりたいと思ってくれることが、私には本当に嬉しいのです。
子どもたちにとって、Joyが卒業して終わりの場所ではなく、何年経っても「また行きたい」と思える場所であり続けていること。
そんな卒業生たちの姿を見るたびに、ここで育まれたつながりは、卒業した後もずっと続いていくのだと感じます。

As a parent myself, I understand how important it is to find a school where you feel comfortable and confident leaving your child each day.
From the beginning, my goal has been to provide a warm, welcoming environment where children receive a strong educational foundation while enjoying the excitement of learning and growing.
That commitment hasn't changed since 1999.

私自身も一人の親として、大切なわが子を毎日預けるスクールを選ぶことが、保護者の皆さんにとってどれほど大切なことか、よくわかります。
どんな先生が子どもを見てくれるのだろう。毎日楽しく過ごせるだろうか。安心して自分らしくいられるだろうか。そして、ここでどんなことを学び、成長していくのだろう。
お子様のことを大切に思うからこそ、スクール選びにはさまざまな想いや期待があると思います。
だからこそ私は、Joyを始めたときから、子どもたちが安心して過ごせる温かい環境の中で、学ぶ楽しさや成長する喜びを感じながら、これからの学びにつながるしっかりとした土台を築いていけるスクールでありたいと考えてきました。
その想いは、1999年の開校以来、今も変わっていません。

1999年の開校以来、文京区のご家庭とともに歩んできました。
